Making a seed bomb

Seed bombs have been a way of re-greening the areas of devastation, whether man-made or through natural process with native species of plants. These are just small ball of clay, hay or cow-dung and variety of seed that anyone could make and just throw out into the barren lands they see around. The only care one must have is about invasive species for the region they are seed-bombing.

Easily one of the easiest ways children can be part of the re-foresting/re-greening of the planet. One forgotten and barren land at a time.

For this activity, anyone need only be active for at most 20 minutes.  One can just throw a few seed bombs in the land they see and let nature take its course. Definitely, a great medium to reintroduce native species of plants to an area damaged by human intervention and/or natural disasters.

One can do this by themselves, or in a group, as the materials and the methods are really easy to find and follow.

For this, you only need:

  • Soil, clay preferably

  • Animal dung, usually cow dung OR Compost OR hay

  • Varieties of seeds to put inside the seed bomb// a selection of native flowers, creepers and more.

  • Water to make the dough.

To make the bomb:

---- to a big bowl or bataa in Nepali, add one cup of clay, one cup of hay or compost and half a cup of the mix of seeds you have, and enough water to make a compact dough.

---- take a small handful of the mix and shape into a ball, making sure the seeds are firmly stuck and not falling apart.

---- let the balls dry in the sun for a couple of hours, or a full day

---- once dry, pack those balls into paper bags or napkins and throw one into any barren place you happen to come by.

The method of seed bombing has been in use for a long time to restore old forgotten places with plants and eventually birds and other animals. It helps create micro-ecosystems that eventually benefit us and all.
